Speedy Sushi
Launching Philanthropic Activities in the Community
Executive Summary
To launch philanthropic activities Speedy Sushi will need means of
funding and a solid support system in the community.

Speedy Sushi primary goal is not to make a profit but to give back to
the community as well. Speedy Sushi’s giving habits can help build its
reputation and brand loyalty. Focusing on philanthropy will affect
internal and external relationships by instilling charitable efforts among
employees, and creating partnerships in the community. Positive image
resulting from philanthropy will strengthen company marketing and improve
the bottom line.

This report summarizes the philanthropic obligations of 5 companies
relevant to the philanthropic projects I propose for Speedy Sushi. I was
able to derive ideas by gathering information on successful philanthropic
activities of other companies. This report includes the 3 projects that, I
propose for Speedy Sushi to launch.

I propose that Speedy Sushi implement the following projects
Project 1: Assistance to Disaster Relief. Each branch of Speedy Sushi will
donate 2 % of the monthly profits to a disaster relief fund of their
choice; either globally or locally. Once the individual restaurant chooses
a specific organization to donate to it will display a poster explaining
about the project and ways in which the customers may also contribute.

Project 2: Donations to Food Banks. Any extra food that Speedy Sushi has on
stock that has only one more week of shelf life will be donated to local
food banks or shelters. Either patrons that volunteer or employees will
transport the food.

Project 3: Helping the Environment. Speedy Sushi will use all
environmentally safe products for preparing the food. Also, all carry out
containers will be made from recyclable material. One percent of all to go
sales will be donated to Earthjustice International, which is a non-profit
law firm for the environment.

Introduction
Purpose
At Speedy Sushi, we understand that our reputation as a responsible
corporate citizen is essential to our continued success. By being
responsive to the needs and interests of our employees, neighbors and
community, we are able to provide sustainable benefits to the communities
where we operate.

Scope
I will focus mainly on local and national charities that Speedy Sushi can
contribute to, and promotions that will fund these endeavors.

Methods
I will research and analyze the philanthropic activities of 20 different
companies. I will choose the 5 that prominently relate to the projects I
propose and give a detailed summary of their philanthropy.

Background of Speedy Sushi
Speedy Sushi was originally started seven years ago in Baltimore, Maryland.

Speedy Sushi was founded as a quick and convenient restaurant for customers
who do not have time to enjoy a sit-down meal, or prefer the ease of
getting to place their own orders without conversing with a waiter or
waitress. Due to the over whelming success of the company Speedy Sushi has
expanded to several other territories nationally and has been making a
substantial profit. At this point in time we have reached our business
goals and it is now time to give back to the communities in which we
operate and assist those in need. We will have no problems implementing
the philanthropic projects I propose for Speedy Sushi,
with dedicated employees, willing volunteers, and my time invested in
research.

Background of Philanthropic Themes
Natural disasters are a serious shock to the economy and even more
devastating to the victims.Families are robbed of their possessions
along with their life future. In order to rebuild millions of dollars in a
natural disaster relief funds are needed to re-establish the communities.

This helps provide hope necessary for their recovery.

To often uneaten food goes to waste when there are too many people going
hungry each day. Millions of people are plagued by hunger. With the
agricultural deficiencies of many over populated countries individuals
suffer from disease and illness. The sparse amounts of food they do
receive are lacking a balance of nutrition. Hunger is not only felt in
third world countries but right in our own communities.

As individuals, no matter where we live, we can, and should, all be part of
the global effort to help our environment. The importance of this is to
preserve the environment to ensure well being for future generations. Land
fills are used as dumping grounds. Toxic waste is being emptied into our
water supply. The continuation of such practices will result in
undesirable conditions for all. Even the philanthropic efforts and
practices of Speedy Sushi can make a difference.

Summary of the Philanthropy of 5 Researched Companies
Wal-Mart- Lauren Haines
Beginning in 1989 Wal-Mart has made a conscious effort to preserve
the environment in which they operate. Wal-Mart has made significant
financial contributions to various environmental organizations. Wal-mart
doesn’t end with just donating money they also operate in ways to preserve
the environment. They implement an HVAC system that using energy
conservatively. Recently, in 2003 Wal-Mart starting using a new lighting
system that; cut down on CO2 emissions by 274,000 tons annually.

Wal-Mart employs an Assistant Manager at every branch that is
responsible for Community Involvement in the local area. This manager is
in charge of making sure that its store is supporting Wal-mart’s commitment
to the environment and to act as a liaison between the store and the
community by providing information concerning environmental issues.

Certain Wal-mart’s have positions for a volunteer Green Coordinator; an
associate that is interested in environmental issues and community
involvement.

Merck- Lauren Haines
Merck is a global leader in pharmaceutical medicines and vaccines and
also aims to make positive contributions to the communities we live in by
supporting a wide range of charitable activities. Merck’s community
initiatives include the Children’s Inn at NIH, Disaster Relief efforts, and
Employee’s philanthropic efforts.

The Children’s Inn, at the NIH, aids children with the life
threatening illnesses. In 1990, Merck made a 3.7 million dollar
contribution to have the facility built. More than 1000 children stay at
the Inn each year and it has hosted patients and families from the U.S. and
57 other nations.

Merck is also committed to providing relief or assistance for major
disaster and in supporting efforts in preparedness. In 1998, Merck donated
4000 pediatric and 56,000 adult doses of a Hepatitis A vaccine to the
Dominican Republic. Merck also donated 224,000 dollars to aid earthquake
victims in El Salvador.

Merck supports numerous programs that allow its employees to
contribute to a national Gift Program. Under the program Merck donates 50%
of every dollar donated by the employees. In 2002, Merck’s employees
donated 6.5 million to support the schools, colleges, and public libraries.

Together with the 3.2 million donated by Merck, a total of 9.2 million
dollars went to support 1,600 organizations.

The Cheesecake Factory- Lauren Haines
The Cheesecake Factory established The Oscar and Evelyn Overton
Charitable Foundation to support worthy causes. Their goal was not only to
fund charities but to also unify the staff and give to the community. The
company participates with the Windows of Hope; which is dedicated to
families that suffered from the 9-11 tragedy.

In 2002 the Oscar and Evelyn Overton Charitable Foundation provided
meals on Thanksgiving for the homeless and continue to give support to The
Salvation Army. Recently, the foundation donated 50,000 dollars to Windows
of Hope Family Relief Fund. This organization provides aid to the family
of victims of the world trade center tragedy who worked in the foodservice
profession throughout the entire complex.

Olive Garden- Lauren Haines
The Olive Garden has two major philanthropic projects it conducts
along with doing business as a restaurant. Not only do they provide
Italian dining but, they also give back to the community through two
philanthropic projects.

Pasta for Pennies was started in 1994 to help raise money to donate
to help aid in the fight against leukemia and lymphoma. The program
consists of a three week period in which students contribute their spare
change to potentially win a pasta party. Also with the help of celebrities
this Pasta For Pennies has raised more than 17 million dollars.

The Olive Garden recognizes the astonishing rate of hunger facing the
U.S. They support America’s Second Harvest with a project called “Drive
Against Hunger”. Through this program the Olive Garden makes donations to
food banks around the country. In just four years the restaurant has
provided 600,000 lbs to food banks across America.

Target- Lauren Haines
Founded in 1962, Target made a commitment to empower and support the
communities it servers. One of the programs created by Target is the
Target Take Charge of Education Program. The program focuses on the arts,
education and on prevention of family violence. To support this program
Target has provided grants in excess of 100 million dollars since 1997.

Currently, the company donates 2 million dollars per week.

Target feels that the arts are essential to bring people with
different perspectives in a community together. To support the arts Target
provides grants to exhibitions, performances, and classes. The company
believes reading is a critical part of a child’s educational process.

Target also funds programs that promote reading at an early age.

6
Family violence prevention remains one of Target’s focuses. By
supporting programs that create healthy and safe living environments;
Targets seeks to help families and communities by funding parent
educations, crisis nurseries, family counseling, after- school programs,
and abuse shelters.

7
Recommendation of Philanthropy for our Company
Assistance to Disaster Relief
The first philanthropic project of Speedy Sushi will be to help provide
funding aid to those that have been victims of natural disasters. Each
branch of Speedy Sushi may choose a disaster relief organization of their
choice; which will be left up to the discretion of that branch manager.

All chains will make donations of 2% of profit sales. However, the branch
manager may decide to make monthly, quarterly or an annual donation. Once
the branch chooses what organization it would like to provide funds to they
will place flyers in the restaurant explaining the organization and its
involvement in disaster relief. There will also be donation envelopes for
the customers, that they can either mail directly to the organization or
leave with the manager.

Donations to Food Banks
Speedy Sushi is a large restaurant chain; potentially a lot of food could
go to waste. That is why I propose that we donate any extra food that has
only a week of shelf life left. This gives ample time to transport the
food to local shelters to help feed the hungry. Certain months food sales
may be over projected there fore leaving an excess of food, and instead of
going to waste it can be used to help those in the community. Instead of
throwing away left over, outdated or slightly damaged (but still edible)
food, Speedy Sushi will donate it to a local food bank. By donating food
we will save money by not using expensive dumpster space for edible food.

Instead of paying for waste hauling services for edible food, food banks
can pick up food for free. By donating edible food, Speedy Sushi will prove
to the local patrons that our business is committed to helping those in
need.

Helping the Environment
All branches of Speedy Sushi will be required to use recyclable materials
that will be used for to go orders. This will show our customers that we
are an environmentally aware business and care for the ecosystem. There
will also be recyclable trash containers through out each branch for the
appropriate waste materials. In addition one percent of all to go sales
will be donated to anon-profit law firm for the environment; called
Earthjustice International. There will be posters and flyers about
Earthjustice International so customers are aware of the cause Speedy Sushi
is supporting. There will also be jars for the customers to make
donations. By making a conscience effort to help the environment our
customers will see us as a caring member of the community and thus enhance
our public image.
